Let’s begin with – What exactly is a style guide?

 

A style guide is essentially a guide for your overall brand appearance and how to apply and use it. Within every style guide is a strategy of how to apply graphics, iconography, use of typography, the colors and percentages of importance as well as photography style. Of course more or less of this will be based on the company and what they are selling. But it provides a structure for the creative process.

One thing to remember is that a style guide helps keep your brand consistent. Anyone on your team or outside vendors will have a visual guide and reference of how to make sure everything is on brand and keep the message clear and intact.

As mentioned before it can consist of: graphics, iconography, use of typography, the colors and percentages of importance as well as photography style. However, all style guides are not the same, it truly depends on the brand. There are a few things that should be apart of every style guide, those are:

 

  • Logo Usage and Placement

This tells people how to use your logo and where it should and should NOT be placed.

Without that you may come across moments when creative liberty is taking place and its may not fit the vision for your brand.

 

  • Brand Colors

Having a branded color palette will keep your look consistent and also show you how much of a particular color should be used.

 

  • Typography Usage

What the brand typefaces are and when and how to use them. Whether its for direct messaging, headlines, or body copy. Knowing what typeface to use, how to use it and when is KEY.
